What I Wore: Spinning Wheel

My life currently is a revolving door of me going places, meeting new people, losing old friends, and packing my life into teeny boxes. But there is one thing that I am so happy for and it's my job, well as I write this, my previous job. TRA Art Group has been my life and family for now more than two years, since I interned there in the winter 2009. It also is one of the main reasons I started this documentary of my clothes so that I could encourage myself to express my inner feelings through the outfits I wore and use them as a visual clue to remember what that day in my life was like.

These pictures were from my last day of work as Gallery Director of TRA(I have another fun filled day of work pictures to still post). They also introduce you to some permanent art of mine. My first tattoo.

I have had this idea for a long time and wanted it for awhile so what better time than now, where I have a major change in my life. I went to a recommended shop in Ferndale with my friend Mike and we both got tattoos together. Both were my design as well. Mike is a sociology phD student and loves gender studies... and is a bit of a goof so I drew him a cutesy cupcake hugging the female symbol to be placed on his hip bone... hahah it's pretty cute. As for mine, it's pretty straight forward. I know I've never wanted a drawing on myself for fear of forever critiquing it, so I went with a color wheel with the primary colors overlapping creating secondary colors and a grey. Let me say, I love it. I look down at my arm and smile at the bright colors. I love that I went with colored outlines instead of grey and that I made the artist re-place the stencil so it's perfectly placed.

My co-workers at TRA have also become an amazing family to me, teasing me, giving me hugs, and encouraging me. I know for a fact that they will always be a major part of my life, and a very proud point in my Michigan experience. I just love them so much, and even though I am jumping around in these pictures it is all still quite bitter sweet and done with a heavy heart. I know they are sad to see me go but are also very excited to see what I do. (and here's a funny work picture)

Anyway so yep... as I type I have boxes stacked around me, creating new walls that will be dismantled and travel across ten states to where they will explode and create a new life for me. Until then I have my camera, computer, and dog. :)

Lauren

Bagley Street Bridge, MexiTown

Tuesday night I drove down to Mexican Town in Detroit for margaritas and yummy food with some of the best people in the world. The area has been in quite a flux lately because of the expansion of the bridge to Canada. One sweet thing they built was a beautiful pedestrian bridge over the highways. So after we stuffed ourselves silly and drank ourselves goofy at Xochimilco, got some cookies at La Gloria Bakery and sat on the bridge to watch the sunset.

The bridge has a great view of the abandoned Michigan Central Depot, downtown, and the Ambassador Bridge. The pedestrian bridge itself is super nice as well except for the fact that it's already been quite vandalized. But hey what do you expect.

So the evening was perfect, perfect weather, perfect people. Full of giggles and silliness. Nights like this are what I'm going to miss the most.

What I Wore: Train Keeps on Rolling

Today (monday) was another awesome filled day. It marked my one week left in Michigan. Sara and I had a girlie shopping day filled with trying on pretty vintage dresses. I bought a gorgeous mustard chiffon cocktail dress for $30!!! and a 40's silk skirt. I swear I own WAY too many skirts. I need blouses!

Afterwards we rode our bikes down to Woodward Ave Brewery for half off food mondays, and I drank a bit too much mead wine. I love this area in the summer and will be excited to visit. We saw Josh and Kurt at the WAB and soon we were all laughing and sharing drinks before we moved the party next door to the Loving Touch (which I talk about often, it's my favorite bar right now, and it's a pool hall hence the name haha). Of course the regular crew showed up and Party Lauren had a good night. The bike ride home was incredible. The air was perfect and no clouds in the sky. I rode with the big dipper to one side and cassiopeia to the other.

What I Wore: Heatpocalypse

Thanks for all the well wishes on my move!! I can't believe I'm leaving Michigan in less than a week. And am I packed? Nope. Haha!

Anyway these past weeks have been so action packed. Waking up to go to work then after hanging out with some amazing friends until the wee hours in the morning. The day I wore this Mike and I got half off dinner at the Woodward Brewery then walked to DQ for mini blizzards then back to the Loving Touch for movie night. I left after the first movie which was "Rubber" which is an amazing movie (it's on Netflix streaming right now). Later that night I enjoyed the cool air from laying ontop of my car watching heat lightening dance in the sky.

Other notable days was hanging with Leyland, Stephanie, and Mike Friday night, then having dinner with Brent and seeing Terrence Malick's new movie "Tree of Life". Which I LOVE Malick's movies. He is a complete genius in the world of film and moving paintings. He knows how to slow down time in order to bring the viewer into every frame. I've had a review of "New World" written on here for some time, which I'm thinking now I need to post it. Tree of Life brought me to tears in the end from the beauty of it all. I know it isn't for everyone (people left the theater) but it really is incredible if you are a visual person... Ok, tangent done. After the movie we met up with friends later at the Emory where we closed the bar and went on to Como's for some pizza... Sunday I packed, hung out with Mike, Leyland, got ice cream with Kristina and again went to the WAB and then listened to bands at the Loving Touch, before I ended the night with a late night bike ride with Brent...

Geez. My days... I know I did a lot before the weekend as well! My days are long and I'm so content. The joy I've been having makes me wish-washy on leaving. But I know that the days are numbered even if I stayed here. The weather gets cold, and people are leaving. So I must live everyday. Even when it's 100 degrees outside. yuck.

What I Did: Garage Sale

So as some people have asked in a few of my previous posts I felt that I should discuss my new major life change. As my longer readers know I was engaged at the beginning of the year and my fiance decided that he no longer wanted the relationship. Some may not know that I am not from Michigan and the main reason I lived here was for that said person. Over the past months I had a bitter sweet relationship with Michigan. I love how easy this place is, I know where to hang, I have my group of friends, and my job... but I never enjoyed the state to the extent of others. I always wanted to go live somewhere new, try new things, meet new people. I am from southern Ohio, I've lived in Brasil as well as Alaska, so I had no real ties to Michigan anymore. So with saving money I am making a leap into a new world for Lauren. On August 1st I am leaving Michigan for good. All through August I will be in Ohio soaking it up with my family before I make the long fun drive to San Francisco in September.

That's right San Fran here I come. I've wanted to live there for the past 4 years. I have amazing friends there, I've shown in galleries there, and best of all no more winter. Thank god.

So of course I had a garage sale with my buddy Mike who is moving to London permanently. Did I sell a lot? Eh... But I had an amazing time drinking beers with my friends and getting sunburnt. We all chilled out, tried to play banjo, rejected peoples offers to buy my dog, made a $5 art pile, got my money for another surprise... Best weekend ever.

What I Wore: DIA

These pictures my lovely Katerina took for me at work before I headed out early for the museum (as per last post). I really love this dress because of the back details but the fit is off on me, the waist is too big and too high. But hey it was inexpensive and surprisingly well made... we all make sacrifices :)

On Friday we hung a large gallery wall getting ready for the big semi annual sale, and to celebrate we danced... Behold our amazing dance moves!
