Guest Post: Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and her pups!

Hello, lovely readers of Sparrow & Urchin! Meg from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter here and lucky me(!!) to have been given my very own guest post while Lauren and Tripp make there trek across the country. I am so excited for them...though, admittedly, I'm longing for that kind of an adventure myself. For now, the hills and canyons of Los Angeles are my playground. I have lived in LA for about 5 years and Laurel Canyon (my neighborhood) is one of my absolute favorite places in this city. It is a particularly good place to explore with your doggies because there are loads of trails, winding roads and vantage points (plus a very large dog park up on Mulholland).

a map of the canyon...
The only slight obstacle being the wildlife that also roams the area (coyotes, hawks, deer and snakes...) but they tend to stay away during the late morning/early afternoon. I suppose the other thing to consider when planning a mini-adventure is the pint-sized nature of my dogs...meet Charlie & Lola!
Lola (on the left) is 7 and Charlie (on the right & actually a girl, despite her name!) is 2 & a half - they are both Chihuahuas, in case you couldn't tell! Clearly, we aren't going on 5 mile hikes with such small creatures because they'd never make it with out being picked up! but shorter walks they can handle.
An example of many of the back roads in our area.
If I walk the dogs on my own this is what ends up happening...I'm gently pulled in opposite directions. Either that or I get tangled up! Luckily, my boyfriend is with me more often then not on our walks!
Sometimes I just get flat out ignored by the girls. But I know they love me anyway...
Well, thanks so much for having us! see you soon. x

Adventures in Camping

Hi everyone! I'm Nicole of Employed Panache, and I am today's guest blogger while Lauren makes her away across the country with her adorable pup, Tripp. I am really excited to write this post because my blog is focused more on what I wear to work, and so I normally don't get to share my life outside of the 9-5 with my readers.

Lauren asked all the guest bloggers to share an adventure with our own dogs, and so fresh off the holiday weekend, here is my latest camping adventure with my Boston Terrier, Donna!

P1010879

Over Labor Day weekend, Donna, my husband, 4 friends, and I drove down to Assateague Island in Maryland to camp for a few days. Above is Donna on our way down - always excited to see where we're going :) We took our time driving down from New Jersey, so the sun was setting by the time we set up camp. The next morning, I took this photo of our "home" for the next few days. My friend has a trailer but my husband and I decided to sleep in our tent to enjoy the fresh air. Yes, it's cozy but it fits 2 adults and 1 Boston Terrier perfectly!

P1010934

For those of you who have not heard of Assateague Island, it runs down the coast of Maryland and Virginia, and it is home to over 300 wild ponies!!

P1010884

It is pretty amazing to "live" among these animals... they are used to people so they come right into your campsite! Visitors must be vigilant and not leave out food or let fresh water run from the spigots because this will attract the ponies and even cause them to act territorial. Essentially, the park rangers advise that you watch the ponies from a safe distance so that everyone stays safe. Donna is great because she just ignores the ponies - no herding instinct in this dog!

P1010887

We camped on the bay side of the island this year, instead of the beach side. In my opinion, the views were more beautiful. Plus, the ponies are fenced off from the ocean side camping spots, so you don't get the same interaction. I actually woke up one morning to a herd grazing outside our tent!

P1010905

The first day, we walked to the bay swimming spot, which had a little bit of sand to lay out on. You can't really swim here because the water is really shallow, but it's fun for dogs to play in. Unfortunately, there were way too many people and ponies around to allow Donna off her leash, so she looked pretty bored (and sandy) after awhile:

As you probably saw from the picture above, my style while camping is very relaxed but still fun! (If you hop over to my blog, you'll see that I try to make all my outfits fun whenever possible, even at work :) But the key while camping is bring lots of layers... during the day, it could be really hot, but at night the ocean winds cool the island down fast. Here I'm soaking in the sunset right before we cooked dinner, and it was already a lot cooler than earlier that day:

Speaking of sunset, the colors were amazing, even without a direct view of the sun setting!

The next day, my husband and I felt bad that Donna couldn't run around much the day before, so we let her off leash right behind our campsite. This is a much muddier area of the bay, and while Donna loves to roll in anything yucky, we kept her focus with a good game of fetch.

This was a perfect way to tire her out so that she slept in the trailer while we hung out at the ocean side that afternoon. So in case you were wondering, I was wearing a tunic/cover-up above... no, I didn't have shorts on but I did have a bathing suit on ;) And since I have short hair, I love to tame it with a scarf or bandanna while at the beach.

So in the essence of time and with an already picture heavy post, I'll leave you with this last picture of Donna, tuckered out but happy at the end of our last day. I could go on forever about all the details of my camping adventure... but instead I encourage you to have one of your own :)

guest post - stories read aloud

Hello, everyone! Christy, here (from stories read aloud). I'm thrilled to be filling in for Lauren while she's away in New York!

I originally had a ballet-inspired photo shoot planned for my guest post. However, the outfit morphed into something entirely different by the time today rolled around! I'm still happy with the outcome, and I think this outfit showcases something I really love about the style blogging community. I've only been blogging since this past summer, and even in that short amount of time, I've learned so much about myself. Plus, having the support of amazing gals like Lauren has encouraged me to venture outside my comfort zone when it comes to my style. Even though I feel that this outfit screams "Christy!", I doubt that I would have thought to put something like it together a year ago.

waking life: the art of scarves

Hi everyone! Caitlin, here (from Waking Life)! I'm delighted to be filling in for the lovely Lauren while she's off gallivanting around the Great Big Apple :) I've always been interested in fashion and self-expression through ornamentation, but it wasn't until I first explored the world of haute couture that I really recognized fashion as a legitimate artform. In honor of Lauren's artistry (and my own appreciation for the finer things), I thought I would put together a little found-art show with some of my favorite scarves (complete with artsy-fartsy naming--click on the image for a link to a post in which I wore the scarf!).

(To the Teeth, Ragamuffin's)

(Horseplay, Plato's Closet)

(Paris is Burning, Goodwill)

(Other Folk, Bargain Boutique)

(Kahlo's Calling, Bargain Boutique)

(Tramps and Thieves, Forever 21)

(Raspberries Bygone, Goodwill)

(Safe Space, unknown)

(Twisted, Nordstrom Rack)

Some girls pile on beautiful jewelry, some add flair with designer bags, some (okay, all--I've never met a girl who didn't love them) collect closetfuls of shoes, some change their hair color or their nail color or bling out their waistline with wonderful belts--I go gaga for glorious scarves. What artful accessory do you love most?

Come hang out on my blog if you get a moment this (Monday's almost over!) afternoon! I'd love to get to know you :)

Have you met Frankie?

Hi there Sparrow and Urchin readers, it is I, your friendly guest blogger Ebony. Mwuhahaha! For those who didn’t get the Sesame Street reference, shame on you, or me, either way - let’s move on. Lauren is an amazing artist. I don’t have an arty bone in my body… Yeah.. I was the kid that doodled the flower, not ‘sketched’ persay. I like to fancy myself as an art appreciator (it’s a reputable profession, trust me.) And when I say art, I mean arty magazines and prints off Etsy. But enough about me, we’re here to talk about Frankie.

Frankie is an amazing Australian publication that showcases art, craft, music, fashion, food and current events. It has a huge focus on indie stores and has the amazing ability to make you tear up on one page and be cackling the next. I like to think of it as an old friend… although you only get a chance to meet up once every two months, the warm feeling you get from conversing lasts until you meet again. How could you resist a publication that showcases...

Wearable fashion photographed in a fun, quirky way.

Cute (and useful!) comparisons of products in every issue. This issue tried out different soups.

Interviews with local artists and store-keepers.

And if that wasn’t enough, each issue contains a bi-monthly pull out calendar that features amazing art on the other side! And no, I don’t still have my March/April calendar up.. it was just for the shoot. Promise.

It’s easy to see why it’s my favourite magazine. I just can’t get enough… I’ve bought both their cookbooks and put in a Christmas request for their 2011 diary and SPACES book.

Unfortunately the international subscription prices are a little pricey - but as of December I’ll be living near a number of newsagents, so if you ever wanna copy (we could work out a yearly rate if you’re super keen!) just swing by my blog and drop me a line. Or for a free weekly dosage of Frankie lovin, just head to their website and sign up for their newsletter. Easy! Thanks for letting me share this obsession of mine, and no, they didn’t pay me to write this post… it is my dream to be paid to write for them though, so feel free to bombard them with emails about how good an advocate I am :p Hope you had an amazing Thursday!

Old Town & New Town

Hello, I'm guest posting for Lauren today all the way from Edinburgh, Scotland where I'm studying abroad for the entire year! Since I have the whole year here, I haven't put too much pressure on myself to hike up every hill and hustle through all the history museums. However I have two friends from home visiting this week so stomping all over the city is a priority.

Our first touristy stop was the swift steep ten minute hike up Calton Hill. When you reach the top, not only do you get a good view of the city, but some lovely if somewhat misplaced Grecian columns. I went up there on my first day here, when I was jetlagged out of my mind, so I failed to look over the other half the hill to New Town. Edinburgh is divided into two parts, Old and New Town. New Town (developed in the 18th Century, a misnomer today) was built to assuage the growing population. Although I would claim New Town's architecture isn't as stunning as Old Town, it was where the rich preferred to reside. When my friend and I came down the hill we finally learned the charms of its residential streets.

While I found it fun for taking some repeating line photos, I appreciate the coziness of Old Town, pictured below. So here's some juxtaposition (oo, snobby art word!) of construction vs. "nature." I can't exactly call it nature because this park was also man made, oh well. These photos are from the Meadows, an adorable quintessentially British park. I walk through it every day. Considering I used to pass a hospital and a construction site while walking to class back at college in DC, a park with puppies and children playing is much better.

If you would like to hear and see more of Edinburgh, stop by my blog Quintessentially Quirky.

Thanks,

TESS
